As with any other family asset, privately-held business interests need to be valued in order to reach a fair and equitable division of assets. Unlike assets such as bank accounts, RRSPs, the family home, vehicles, etc., however, the value of a privately-held business is often subjective and difficult to ascertain.
This presentation will attempt to answer the following questions regarding business valuations:
What are the common methods used to value businesses?
What is “goodwill” and when is it a family asset?
What are the key inputs and assumptions that go into most valuation analyses?
What are the common mistakes made in expert valuation reports?
What documents should be obtained in advance of commissioning an expert valuation report?
Please note that this presentation is, as the title suggests, delivered at an introductory level. Lawyers who commission and review expert valuation reports on a frequent basis may wish to bear this in mind. Conversely, this presentation may be of particular interest to lawyers who are new to the area of business valuations or who would otherwise like a “refresher” on this topic.

Kiu is a partner at Blair Mackay Mynett Valuations Inc. and holds the designations of Chartered Professional Accountant and Chartered Business Valuator. He specializes in business valuations and has prepared reports in the context of Family Law matters, shareholder disputes, corporate reorganizations, acquisitions and divestitures and estate planning.
